Shaping the Future: Scientifically Informed Pump Choices
Using contemporary evidence to guide clinical decision-making in the use of sequential intermittent pneumatic compression (SIPC) pumps

Join Robbie Blackwell as she discusses the evidence-base behind the use of compression pumps as part of best-practice management for people living with lymphoedema and other chronic oedemas.

Learn how patient history and clinical presentation can help guide compression pump prescriptions, as Robbie discusses the application of ICG research on guiding optimal pump settings and pump garment styles.

Based on a contemporary understanding of lymphatic pathophysiology, learn principles that are immediately transferrable to clinical practice, and can support you in making effectual compression pump recommendations for your patients.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the application of SIPC pumps in the context of best-practice management of lymphoedema.

  • Describe, in physiological terms how SIPC pumps have the capacity to optimise lymphatic flow in people with lymphatic disease.

  • Outline optimal and effective SIPC pump recommendations inclusive of pump settings, and choice of pump garment for a range of patients, based on patient history and clinical presentation.

Presenter: Robbie Blackwell

Robbie is an occupational therapist and senior lymphoedema therapist, and a team leader in the ALERT Lymphoedema Treatment Clinic, where she has worked since 2017.  Along with providing conservative treatment to patients with lymphoedema, lipoedema and other chronic oedemas, Robbie is trained as an ICG lymphography imaging technician and has coordinated the ALERT ICG Diagnostic Assessment Clinic since 2020. Robbie continues to contribute to the expanding body of research describing common patterns of morphological change observed in the lymphatic system, and the implications on conservative management of lymphoedema.  She forms part of the ALERT education team, developing and delivering accredited lymphedema training, with an appointed role as Honorary Conjoint Associate Lecturer at Macquarie University in 2020.
